The Australian design duo present their most sophisticated collection
to date.
Known for
embodying a youthful Australian spirit, designers Becky Cooper and Bridget
Yorston presented their MBFWA collection to a full house. It may have been held
in the on-site theatre but it could well have been an Amazonian rainforest,
thanks to the atmosphere created by the twelve-foot high Grandiflora wall which
served as a backdrop to the show.
“We were
inspired by the island of Capri, beautiful landscapes, textures, flowers and
that really healthy, 70s, sexy girl,” the pair said when we caught up with them
backstage before the show, describing the range as “Fresh, crisp and raw.”
Guests were
greeted by a strong collection, with crochet, silks and cotton all trotted out
in stark white shades. From midi dresses to shorts to peplum-style tanks,
everything sung of summer. Prints were predominately of the emerald and
sapphire bent with florals featuring and stripes playing second fiddle. Spliced
skirts and blazers with oversized collars were stars and jumpsuits are sure to
be a hit with buyers.
When quizzed
about the importance of showing at MBFWA, Bec & Bridge cited it as an
important part of their business model – both locally and globally. “To have
such a great turnout of internationals this year is really positive for
Australian fashion. It's so exciting and overwhelming,” said Becky. “I think
Australian fashion is all about being fresh, so hopefully that translates
overseas,” said Bridget, grinning back at her partner. With such a wearable
collection, the pair will no doubt be fielding orders already.
