BY JOHNNY
This just proves dreams can come true. Johnny and i went to the same tafe, in which he only graduated a few years before me, then made it into project runway last year and now is debuting his first fashion week collection.
Well done.

Johnny Schembri's debut show opened to rave reviews. We spoke to the
designer just moments before his MBFWA individual debut.
He made quite
the impact on Project Runway, but don't let his reality show roots fool you
into thinking he doesn't have the technical skills to back up the hype. Today
saw the first By Johnny individual MBFWA show unveiled to a house full of eager
editors and buyers.
“It's been a
crazy three years,” said the designer. “It started with the Fringe Markets then
it really took off when I started my online store. The response through
Facebook, Twitter and Instagram has just been amazing. The whole thing filtered
into Project Runway and now here I am.”
The
collection, titled Audrelix, proved one of the most well curated of the week so
far with boyish muscle singlet styles paired with coquettish peplums. But the
real talking points were the unqiue prints – from graphic stripe to embossed
floral. A process which was as much a labour of love for the designer as the
silhouettes themselves.
“I was on the
plane and started squiggling,” he says of the Texta-heavy striped print. “Then
I put it in Photoshop and repeated it and inverted it and it ended up looking
really cool. And then I also hand drew the florals and blocked them out and
printed them in rubber on linen, and lined on rubber – just spending time
playing with fabrics and textures.”
Envisioned in
mint greens, lilac-ish purples and sweet blush shades, the immediate reviews
outside the venue were overwhelmingly positive, leaving the designer glowing
about his MBFWA journey. “Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is a great platform for
emerging talent to get out there. It's something that I've always wanted to do
and I'm so glad I have.
